今日は命日でもあるのでフレディ・マーキュリー（Freddie Mercury)のYOUTUBE動画スペシャル・再生回数ベスト20曲をご紹介します。いつ聴いても今聴いても彼のサウンドにはしびれます。

【フレディーマーキュリーってどんな人？】
フレディ・マーキュリー（Freddie Mercury, 1946年9月5日 - 1991年11月24日）は、イギリスのシンガーソングライターで、ロックバンドクイーンのリードヴォーカル・ピアニストです。本名は、Farrokh Bulsara（ファルーク・バルサラまたはフレデリック・バルサラ）と言います。
1973年、アルバム『戦慄の王女』でデビューしました。その後、ソロ歌手としても活動していました。
1991年11月24日、HIV感染合併症によるニューモシスチス肺炎（旧名・カリニ肺炎）のため死去されました。45歳の若さ。
親日バンドとされるクイーンのメンバー中でも最も親日家で、来日公演時以外にも1986年秋にお忍びで来日して骨董品などを買い求めていたそうです。有名な伊万里焼コレクターでの一人です。新宿二丁目には生前行き着けのバーがあったそうです（出没!アド街ック天国2007年12月8日放送分より）。また、来日公演時のMCの半分は日本語だったそうです。ロンドンの自宅には、日本庭園があるそうです。アルバム『バルセロナ』の「La Japonaise」では歌詞の殆どは日本語でした。

   クイーンは、歌詞のフレーズというものに過激なまでにまったく新しい意味をもたらした。ロックン・ロールのギンギラギンな一面をことさらに強調していたことは疑いようがなく、リトル・リチャードとフレディ・マーキュリーはおどけた振る舞いを続けていた。曲においては、彼らは少しばかりのまじめさや気取りを見せることがあり、次第にそういったポーズが目立つようになっていったが、実際の彼らがまじめだったり気取っていたりしたことはいささかもなかったのだ。クイーンのシングル曲はいま聴いてもきわめてすばらしい。後期の作品「Hammer to Fall」だろうと、全盛期のナンバー「Bohemian Rhapsody」、「Killer Queen」、「You're My Best Friend」だろうと、そのすばらしさは変わらない。彼ら4人が見せてくれた抜け目のないメロディー・センス、洗練されたヴォーカルのハーモニー――マーキュリーのトボけた表情は言うに及ばず――は、見事に時代を乗り越えている。（Rickey Wright, Amazon.com）

Made in Heaven

   絶望的な状況の中で制作された前作『Innuendo』が、1977年の『News Of The World』以来もっとも完成度の高いアルバムであり、クイーンの歴史を有終の美で飾ったとすれば、本作は蛇足という気がしないでもない。しかし、フレディ・マーキュリーが1991年11月に亡くなった後、バンドの手元には大量のデモ音源が残っていたという。その中には、マーキュリーのヴォーカル・トラックも混じっていた。
   クイーンは、これらのトラックを完成させ、ファンに届けようと決心したのである。総決算をいま一度試みたというわけだろうか？ それとも、悲しみを克服するにはそうするしかなかったのだろうか？ 憶測は尽きない。だが、「フレディ・マーキュリーの魂に捧ぐ」とうたった本作が期待はずれに終わったことは確かだ。古いトラック（マーキュリーの1985年のソロ・アルバムから引っ張りだしてきた「I Was Born To Love You」や、メイの『Back To The Light』からの大味な「Too Much Love Will Kill You」）と新しいトラックを織り交ぜた内容だが、無理に寄せ集めたという感じはぬぐえない。あくまでもこだわり型のコレクター向けだろう。（Andrew McGuire, Amazon.co.uk）

   クイーンのカリスマ・シンガーとして一世を風靡しながら1991年にエイズでこの世を去ったフレディ・マーキュリー。翌92年4月20日、彼への友情と敬意を表するためにロック・アーティストたちがロンドンのウェンブリー・スタジアムに集結、追悼コンサートを行った。その模様を収めたのが本映像作品である。
   とにかく出演ラインアップが凄い。フレディを除くクイーンのメンバーたちはもちろんメタリカ、ガンズ＆ローゼズ、ロバート・プラント、デヴィッド・ボウイ、ジョージ・マイケル、ライザ・ミネリらが名曲の数々を熱唱。彼ら第一線級アーティストが歌うヴァージョンを聴くことによって、改めてクイーンの音楽の素晴らしさ、フレディの偉大さを再認識させられる。エルトン・ジョンとアクセル・ローズのデュエットによる「ボヘミアン・ラプソディ」は圧巻！（山崎智之）
