1967年7月13日、イギリス人の著名なレーサー、トム・シンプソンが、服用していたアンフェタミンとアルコール、そして熱中症の複合作用によりレース中に死亡した。これがモン・ヴァントゥに悪評を招きよせ、今日に至るまで「死の山」「魔の山」と形容される所以である。山頂直下にはシンプソンの記念碑が建立されており、自転車ファンの聖地となっている。1970年には、かのエディ・メルクスがこの山頂ゴールを制したもののリタイヤ寸前にまで追い込まれている。彼はゴール後に酸素吸入を必要とするほどのダメージを受けていたが、その後のステージでも総合首位を守り、結局は総合優勝を勝ち取りました。
